When Lolita was 14, she wrote in her diary: 'Please, can someone give me a uterus?'. Little did she know her plea would be answered 18 years later, thanks to a group of Swedish scientists pioneering uterus transplant surgery, and a donation from her own sister.
Recipients take heavy immuno-suppressant drugs after surgery to prevent rejection of the uterus, which come with their own side effects."All transplantation, all surgery, has its risks," said Dr Evie Kendal, a bioethicist at Deakin University.Concern about the rights of uterus donors is also sparking debate.
Lolita said that was never an issue with her sister, or her mother, who also offered her uterus to her daughter. "The families of dead donors will often feel an emotional attachment to the organ as some sort of representation of their lost loved one. Worse still, women could be sedated and have their uteri stolen from them. Allegations are rife, though hard to substantiate, that this is already happening with kidneys.
