As a teen, Anniki Sommerville went into the sea wearing a towel so nobody would see her body. Now her daughters are showing her another way
It’s hot and my kids want to go into the sea. They run ahead while I stay seated and shuffle – yes, literally shuffle – my way towards the water so that my bum doesn’t leave the sand. It’s chaotic to say the least. Nonetheless I’m still worrying about whether I should have gone a size up in my. It feels like more of my bum is bulging out than usual. I look down and notice that my cellulite looks much worse when illuminated by sunlight.
. It was bible thick and I leafed through it greedily, lapping up the images of stick-thin models and glossy ads for creams that promised to deliver spectacular levels of beauty and perfection. On holiday in Spain in my teens I went into the sea with my towel still on because I hated exposing my thighs. I rarely stood up in photos and would breathe in hard so that I often looked tense.
Recently I was sitting next to a large group of twenty-somethings. The women were gorgeous, relaxed in their bodies, and fully present. None of them shuffled on their butts towards the sea. They laughed easily. Can I finally spend the next phase of my life embracing this body that has done so much? These strong legs that have carried me so far?
