Artbank, which leases art to businesses, governments and consumers, is celebrating a record year with a canine-themed exhibition for International Dog Day.

might be the most famous, and valuable, art work owned by the federal government, but 50 years after that famous acquisition another art agency is using International Dog Day on Saturday to show off some of the thousands of works it has obtained over the past four decades.

The exhibition, which was the idea of Artbank consultant Courtney Kidd with the backing of the agency’s director and fellow dog lover Zoe Rodriguez, showcases works that have appreciated sharply in value since they were acquired.purchased in 1995 for $12,000 and now valued at $45,000 to $60,000. High-profile Melbourne painter Prudence Flint’sAdvertisement, was purchased in 2005 for $2000. Its value is now $8000 to $10,000.

Puppy, 2012, by Nat Thomas, is made of shells and measures 39cm high. Puppy is in Artbank’s window for International Dog Day. Artbank recently bought a sculpture of a camp dog made by an artist from the Far North Queensland community of Aurukun. The dog now stands guard in the foyer of University Chambers in Sydney’s legal quarter.
