Lawyer Richard Brooks pulls out a pile of bills and counts them into a waiter’s hand, explaining that he and his friends are members of a club.
Roberto Rivas teaches Spanish full-time at a local high school, and on weekends, he waits tables at two restaurants, including a branch of multinational pancake house IHOP, so he can pay his bills.
Brooks pulled out a pile of $US100 bills and counted them into Rivas’ hand, explaining that he and his friends were members of the $US1000 Breakfast Club. Each person had contributed $US100 to leave for the server, $US1600 in all.He says since his family immigrated to the United States from Venezuela in December last year, he’s been saving money to buy his mother new hearing aids, and the tip now allows him to buy them.
Groups that leave large tips for servers have become more popular since the COVID-19 pandemic, as 100 Dollar Dinner Clubs have taken off in places such as Wyoming and Utah. While he was attending law school in his 20s, he says he worked as a waiter on campus at Boston University for five years to help pay his bills.
Tulio Maldonado, a server at the IHOP restaurant in Saugus, Massachusetts, receives a $US1300 tip from Brooks.Ten people – a few friends and some people he didn’t know who saw his post on Facebook – showed up at the first breakfast in March at an IHOP in Framingham, Massachusetts. A further three who couldn’t make it each sent him $US100, Brooks says.
“A thousand-plus dollars is a lot of money, but it doesn’t go as far if a bunch of people are sharing it,” Brooks says. “By giving it all to one person, you’re doing something that could make a difference in their life.” “I really love making new friends around the table – the camaraderie is incredible,” he says. “I don’t have the means to do something like this on my own, and most of the other people are everyday working folks, too. But together, what we do really adds up.”
