At Dallas homeless camp, trash and guns debate misses the voices of those who live here | SharonFGrigsby
One of the unhoused families and individuals living on a section of Coombs Street under Interstate 45 keeps its furniture and other household items organized into a home of sorts. One of the women whose home I visited in South Dallas Saturday morning appeared to love vintage decor as much as I do. Her Queen Anne-style couch and the antique star-pattern quilt on her bed look a lot like those in my own house.
The official notice about the city’s planned action didn’t help matters. Included in the brief warning was this line, with italics emphasis: “Please remove all personal belongings in order to protect your property.”, a 10-minute walk to the west, those who call Coombs home feared their entire lives were about to be thrown away.
My interviews also left me believing that both sides are trying to work in the best interests of the homeless — if only they could come together. Social-justice activists helped a couple, who has lived in this tent for more than a year since the man lost his job due to COVID cutbacks, move to another spot Saturday.
Across from Lewis’ spot, a middle-aged woman watched dejectedly as her husband helped volunteers clear out the couple’s tent in order to relocate them. Sonya Jones-Adams is a camp long-timer and skeptical of anything she hears. She’d love a safer space, but for now she’s intent on stretching “my food stamps to buy enough ice to stay safe in the heat.”
