Terry Francona's managerial career in Cleveland ended quietly on Sunday with a 5-2 loss in Detroit.
Cleveland Guardians manager Terry Francona looks on before the first inning of a baseball game against the Detroit Tigers , Sunday, Oct. 1, 2023, in Detroit. APDETROIT — A hallmark of Terry Francona’s career as manager in Cleveland has always been his ability to stay in the moment, never getting too high or too low, and never looking past what needed to be done., brought down the curtain on Francona’s 11 seasons at the helm for the Guardians.
Watching the sendoff that Detroit put together for legendary slugger Miguel Cabrera was easier to do from across the diamond, Francona admitted. It gave him a unique perspective on the situation as somebody whose teams have faced Cabrera for the better part of two decades. Francona admitted he gets a kick out of watching retirement and hall of fame ceremonies for competitors such as Cabrera, Ichiro and David Oritz over the last few seasons.
“I’m home in every ballpark,” Francona said. “I mean, I’ve always felt that way. I pretty much know everybody’s name when you walk in from whatever gate you come in from. And that’s part of what I love about this.” “I hope he always looks at it and remembers the last team he had and remembers that we gave everything we could for him and just played our hearts out,” Naylor said. “We did it for him, not for ourselves.”“He’s such a good leader, such a good mentor to all of us,” Naylor said. “He teaches us to play the game the right way and just to have fun and then trust ourselves. We just go out there and try to win every game for him. We love him to death and we’re all super thankful.
