This Netflix documentary occasionally feels contrived, but its transparency about Tyson’s mental health struggles make up for it
alumnus Tommy Fury and his partner Molly Mae Hague add some narrative colour, as does eldest daughter Venezuela, approaching her 13th birthday and straining against parental expectation . But while the show occasionally feels contrived rather than fly-on-the-wall – a scene where Paris signs copies of her memoir while making a plot-expanding phone call springs to mind – its courageous transparency about Tyson’s mental health struggles more than make up for brief instances of scriptedness.
As fans know, this isn’t the first time Tyson has retired; back in 2015, after winning IBF, WBO and WBA titles, he left the sport only to develop substance abuse problems, gaining 10 stone and struggling with suicidal thoughts, bipolar and depression,” explains Paris. “Once he’s in [a bad] mood, it takes a lot for him to swing back round.
Of course, Tyson is only human – in many ways, that’s precisely the show’s thesis. Yet, even at his most fallible, there is something irresistible about his arc. As the series draws to a close, with Tyson’s latest comeback in full swing, it is clear that Netflix has found a story that appeals to a part of us much, much older than his docusoap medium.
In ancient Rome, Tyson might have been a gladiator; in 6th-century Britain, someone like Beowulf. In 2023, whether he’s helping his kids on the monkey bars or training to knock out a nemesis, Tyson is as complex as he is charismatic – just the way we’ve always liked our heroes.
