On Tuesday, outside the detention facility, migrants held a peaceful protest, pushing back against the Mexican government’s narrative that migrants started the fire. They asked for government accountability, saying, “We’re human beings, not animals. Treat us with dignity.”

Martin Solorzano, from Guatemala, had just arrived by train Saturday night. He came by the migrant facility Tuesday to see if any of the people he met on the train were victims. “My family called this morning to see if we were all fine,” he said. “I’m in shock. This is the level of desperation we feel [where] we would risk it all.”
