A 22-year-old man claiming to be the gunman handed himself to the nearby Ghyvelde police station at 5pm local time on Saturday. The alleged perpetrator told police he killed a person, believed to be 29 years old, in the French town of Wormhout and subsequently took the lives of four others at the Loon-Plage refugee camp.
The four victims at the camp are understood to be two security agents and two people residing there, Reuters reports.It was not immediately clear what the motives were for the shootings at Wormhout and Loon-Plage, located about six miles from the Channel. According to the charity Care4Calais, refugees have been camping in the area for years, predominantly “Kurdish or Afghan and include many families with small children”.
