At least six people die after Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in eastern Indonesia erupts, spewing explosive plumes of lava and forcing authorities to evacuate several nearby villages, officials say.
At least six have died people in Indonesia after a series of volcanic eruptions on the remote island of Flores.
The eruption at Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki about midnight on Monday spewed thick brownish ash as high as 2,000 metres into the air and hot ash hit a nearby village. It burned several houses including a convent of Catholic nuns, said Firman Yosef, an official at the Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki monitoring post."After the eruption, there was a power outage and then it was raining and big lightning which caused panic among residents," Hadi Wijaya, a spokesperson for The Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, said on Monday.Fiery lava and rocks hit the nearest settlements about 4km from the crater, Mr Wijaya added.
Indonesia's Disaster Management Agency lowered the known death toll from an earlier report of nine, saying it had received updated information from local authorities.
