San Antonio Metro Health has received 1,000 doses of the monkeypox vaccine from the Texas Department of State Health Services — enough to fully vaccinate 500 people.

Metro Health announced Tuesday in a news release that 720 of its vaccine doses will be distributed to 360 existing patients at the following local clinics: Alamo Area Resource Center, BEAT AIDS, CentroMed Santa Rosa Pavilion Clinic, Kind Clinic San Antonio, San Antonio AIDS Foundation and University Health’s Family-Focused AIDS Clinical Treatment Services.
Dr. Anita Kurian, Metro Health assistant director, said in a statement that the remaining 280 doses will be used to vaccinate up to 140 close contacts identified during the department’s case investigations. Monkeypox can spread to anyone through close, personal, skin-to-skin contact. The infection causes a rash, which may look like pimples or blisters and some patients experience a flu-like illness.Metro Health is promoting a free Q&A forum hosted by Living Positive San Antonio, an HIV social and support group, in which experts will discuss the monkeypox virus and how to limit exposure.Spanish and American Sign Language interpretation will be available.
