Tahnee Edwards just wants 'everyday Blakfullas' to feel celebrated by her streetwear. Getting nominated for a fashion designer of the year award is an added bonus.
At the National Indigenous Fashion Awards , Tahnee Edwards 's Gammin Threads is representing 'VIC mob' with in-jokes and loud colour Tahnee Edwards never wanted to work a corporate job — fashion was all she dreamt of doing growing up.
Creatively blocked and desperate to get out of another ill-fitting job, Edwards soon found herself working in community for the first time at Djirra, an Aboriginal family violence organisation. But her dream of a life in fashion never really went away."I felt super inspired to create some designs around my love and admiration for Aboriginal women, the women in our community holding it down and getting shit done with very little support," she remembers.
"I've always been political, I'm a staunch feminist, I'm a proper lefty and my first designs were political, but we're multifaceted people." As Edwards's confidence as a designer has grown over the years, she's moved beyond graphic tees to create streetwear in its entirety, from track pants to dresses, mesh tops, beanies and totes.Edwards describes the streetwear collection, inspired by iilk as a "celebration of VIC mob" and "representation of parts of culture that aren't always represented in the mainstream".
"People might be thinking, ' — really, does that belong on the runway?' But when you see Tahnee's designs you'll understand why she belongs there."
