Australia’s foreign minister also said there was a long road ahead to more stable relations with Beijing, after a meeting with her Chinese counterpart.

| Foreign Minister Penny Wong has warned against tensions escalating into conflict in the Indo-Pacific, in a reference to China’s growing military assertiveness in the region, during her maiden speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Friday .

Senator Wong repeated calls from the international community for Beijing to use its “no limits friendship” with Moscow to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine, which has upended energy and food markets globally and shows no sign of ending. The speech comes after Senator Wong met her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, on the sidelines of the General Assembly in a bid to improve bilateral ties.

“In terms of issues of difference, obviously first amongst them is the issue of trade blockages, and that is the issue I focused on at the outset,” she said. The government wants China to lift trade sanctions on billions of dollars of Australian exports, including wine, coal, barley and beef.

The meeting and speech come amid regional tensions after US Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan last month sparked China’s anger. China conducted unprecedented live-fire military drillsand around the self-governing island, which Beijing considers part of its territory. In an attempt to reset the tone of diplomacy in the region, she said a new era of Australian investment in smaller nations was under way. Australia and the US are increasingly concerned aboutin the Pacific, including its so-called debt diplomacy with smaller nations.
