Cash to splash and a certain style have gone into creating what is surely Britain’s hottest-ticket accommodation.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m duly impressed by the hand-chiselled mosaics and colourful frescoes adorning the walls – from images of the Three Graces in the living room, to those indicating how to use dumbbells in the exercise room.

She’s right. My two-night stay in what is surely Britain’s hottest-ticket hotel – I checked in just after South Africa. “Having a hotel is like having a magazine,” she says. “You target a certain group of people with a type of content.” More portraits hang in the drawing room, mainly of the Hobhouse family who lived here for more than two centuries, and whose images also grace the spacious bedrooms. These are all beautifully designed: one has an enormous bathtub from which you can look out of the double-aspect bathroom; another bedroom features original hay mangers on the wall.

That’s my cue to visit the cider barn, or “cyder” as The Newt calls it, where I’m delighted to find the drink is nothing like the one I sipped in my youth. A delicious rosé complements the freshest broad beans with whipped goats curd, while a shiraz blend brings out the flavour of my mushroom main with caramelised walnuts and egg yolk .
