Senate President Sue Lines, who is an atheist, would like to see the 121-year-old tradition of reading the Lord's Prayer before each sitting day in the chamber scrapped to represent diversity in Parliament.

The Lord’s Prayer has been read by the presiding officers in the House of Representatives and the Senate at the start of each sitting day since 1901 but the atheist Senator Lines wants to see an end to the tradition.

President of the Senate Sue Lines wants to see the reading of the Lord's Prayer scrapped from the start of each sitting day. Speaker of the House of Representatives Milton Dick reportedly has no plans to end the tradition. Picture: NCA NewsWire / Gary Ramage Members and Senators are not required to be present for, or participate in, the reading of the Lord’s Prayer.

“Is it an unreasonable thing to quote from a book that more than half the population is committed to? In Australia it is,” he said. Both Houses of Parliament also have an acknowledgement to country at the start of each sitting day after the Lord’s Prayer is read, a tradition introduced in 2010. Senator Pauline Hanson strongly rejected the new flags and the acknowledgement of country on the second sitting of the 47th Parliament.
