The long ball is hurting the A’s — they give them up and don’t hit many themselves.
The Athletics continue to give up home runs during a time where they’ll be without their leading home run threat.
Before the game, the A’s placed Seth Brown, their leading home run and RBI man a year ago, on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain. Ten days, retroactive to Sunday, is the least amount of time Brown will miss. Oblique strains, Kotsay conceded, can be tricky. The Orioles managed just six hits against A’s starter JP Sears and four relievers, but the three homers accounted for all the scoring until Ramon Urias hit a run-scoring single in the eighth against Domingo Acevedo.
The A’s threatened to score more than they did in the Tampa Bay series, but continually came up empty after the first inning. In the seventh, Jace Peterson was stranded at third when Kevin Smith, Conner Capel and Shea Langeliers all struck out. With two on the eighth, Perez struck out Diaz and got Laureano on a grounder.
The Athletics have now given up 20 home runs in 10 games, while hitting only eight. The 14 home runs surrendered over the last four games equals the most of a four-game stretch in franchise history.
