Japan is set to join the AUKUS military technology sharing pact alongside Australia, the US and UK in a major boost to alliance building in the face of China’s growing assertiveness.

US ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel wrote last week that Japan was “about to become the first additional Pillar II partner”.
