The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says the AUKUS submarine program will only be “unstoppable” when there is a nuclear boat with an Australian flag on it.
It comes after the White House vowed to provide Australia with a nuclear-powered submarine at the “earliest possible date”.
Mr Sheridan told Sky News host Chris Smith the program will be in danger of being cancelled by a subsequent prime minister until the nation has its own nuclear submarine. “Even if it’s a second-hand Los Angeles Class American boat with two-thirds of its crew being American or a second-hand British Trafalgar boat with half its crew being British,” he said.
