The unseasonably wet weather that has inundated much of northern Australia over the past week is set for one final flourish, writes Sky News Australia Meteorologist Alison Osborne.

The Northern Territory and Queensland felt the brunt of the northwest cloud band as it moved eastwards over the weekend, with parts of the Sunshine State’s north-west receiving as much as 100mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am on Monday. The Outback town of Tennant Creek, meanwhile, has recorded its wettest July since 1978 – and we’re only a few days into the month.

Widespread accumulated totals of between 30 to 50mm are forecast for the state, with up to 80-100mm possible for the coast between Mackay and Townsville. An unprecedented mid-winter torrent has broken records in the Northern Territory and Queensland this week. Picture: Sky News Australia
