When Australians Frank and Glenda Kalyk moved into Bordeaux, it was a happy case of “there goes the neighbourhood”.

Frank and Glenda Kalyk at Chateau Picoron, with 4.5 hectares of merlot vines.

They approached Stephane Derenoncourt, a neighbour and one of the leading winemaking consultants in Bordeaux, who signed up immediately. “Stephane is keen on trying new things,” says Frank. “He loved the idea of working with two Australians.” “He went down to Picoron, had a look at the place and suggested that we should try something different. ‘You’re doing the same thing as all the other chateaux,’ he said. ‘You’ll never stand out from the crowd that way’.

The Kalyks worked with Oslo-based design studio OlssønBarbieri to develop new branding and packaging featuring non-traditional bottle shapes, palindromic wine names, and illustrations by French cartoonist Jochen Gerner. The resulting range of wines certainly stands out from the local crowd – and has been embraced by the locals.“Bordeaux historically has been quite set in its ways,” says Glenda.
