Australian cyclist Jay Vine has walked for the first time since the horrific crash at the Itzulia Basque Country race that almost killed him. The 28-year-old was hospitalised with life-threatening injuries and had expected to undergo surgery on his spine at the very least. His UAE Team Emirates medical director Dr Adrian Rotunno reported on Saturday that last year’s Tour Down Under winner Vine would remain in hospital and would be in a neck brace for up to six weeks.
” In her own post, Vine’s wife Bre said it’s been made abundantly clear to them how dire the outcome could have been. “Across the past few days, the doctors/specialists have stressed to us just how lucky Jay is to have ‘only’ these injuries, and nothing permanent/more life-altering, whilst explaining what could have happened — which, to be honest, was daunting for us both to hear,” she wrote.
