One of surfing’s genuine gold medal favourites is being assessed just days out from the start of the Olympics surfing event in Tahiti.
Australia’s leading gold medal hope Jack Robinson has been injured at Teahupo’o just days before the Paris 2024 surfing window opens at one of the world’s most fearsome waves.
Surfing Australia sources have confirmed to this masthead that Robinson fell during his second training session in Tahiti on Thursday , injuring his foot after colliding with Teahupo’o’s infamously razor-sharp reef. Jack Robinson helped by medical staff after suffering an injury during a practice session at Teahupo’oRobinson was immediately taken out of the water on a jet ski and assessed by medical staff before being taken to a nearby medical facility for further treatment.
Swell at Teahupo’o dropped overnight and conditions are not believed to have played a significant factor in Robinson’s fall. The Olympics opening rounds are expected to begin on Sunday July 28 , pitting the West Australian native in a race against the clock to be fit for his opening heats. Robinson is regarded as one of the best barrel riders in the world and a favourite to take out the men’s event having won last year’s Tahiti Pro in pumping two-metre Teahupo’o waves.The Australian surfing team has kept Ryan Callinan and Sally Fitzgibbons on standby in case of injury or unavailability.
