Olympic champion Mollie O’Callaghan has given up her own 4x200m freestyle relay gold medal to great mate Jamie Perkins, paying a heartfelt tribute to the sidelined swimmer. Australia’s quartet of O’Callaghan, Lani Pallister, Brianna Throssell and Ariarne Titmus set a new Olympic record to win the race against all-star competition from the US and China. But O’Callaghan was quick to celebrate Perkins and Shayna Jack for their heat swims.

“To have these girls beside me it means the world. Jamie is my best friend at training, she’s been there for me. “She’s gone through a back injury, I think this gold medal means a lot for me to give to her. She’s well deserving of it. They make up this team, it’s the six of us.” Proving the difference between a heat gold and one won for swimming in the final, Throssell said she felt like a first-time champion despite now having two Olympic relay titles to her name.
