Max Purcell downs world number seven Casper Ruud to gain the best victory of his singles career, defeating the Norwegian in just under two hours in Cincinnati.

But Australian number one Alex de Minaur's run at the ATP Masters 1000 event is over after he crashed out 7-5, 6-4 at the hands of 36-year-old Frenchman Gael Monfils.

Purcell was outside the world's top 200 a year ago and seen primarily as a doubles player, but he rocketed up the singles rankings early in 2023 with an impressive spell on the Asian circuit. Having fended off three break points of his own in the next game, Purcell held to go 5-4 up before two long forehands from Ruud presented match point and then victory.
