The government has extended the export ban on minerals from nickel to bauxite, as economic nationalism becomes more strident in the run-up to the presidential election.

| Indonesia will stop exporting bauxite, which is used to make aluminium, this year as South-East Asia’s largest economy doubles down on protectionist policies toIndonesia’s Investment Minister, Bahlil Lahadalia, confirmed the bauxite ban in remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday.

Mr Lahadalia said the Indonesian government was taking this action to encourage domestic down-streaming. “Even if this case will be brought to the WTO, we will be fine because we have learnt from other developing countries,” he said. “The government will continue to consistently carry out domestic down-streaming so that added value is enjoyed domestically for the progress and welfare of the people,” Mr Joko wrote on Facebook a month ago.

Indonesia’s mining law states that the export of other unprocessed minerals including copper will also stop, although no timing has been given.
