Moesha Johnson has won another Olympic medal for Australia, taking silver in the gruelling 10km marathon swim on Thursday. Johnosn, who at 26 was making her Olympic debut, led the race for much of the event, which was a six-lap epic fighting currents in the River Seine. Dutchwoman Sharon van Rouwendaal, who won the event in 2016 and finished second in Tokyo, pipped Johnson in the closing stages to take gold. Johnson claimed silver ahead of Italian Ginevra Taddeucci in a thrilling finish.
It capped a stunning Olympics for Johnson, who finished sixth behind American superstar Katie Ledecky in the final of the 1500m. Johnson made a brilliant start to lead the field after one lap of the race. The Aussie remained in the front pack as van Rouwendaal set the pace for the second lap. Johnson returned to the front at the halfway stage and eventually broke clear, along with van Rouwendaal and Taddeucci. The trio quickly moved well clear of the chasing pack to set up a thrilling final lap.
