Daniel Sanders is on course to become the second Australian to win the Dakar Rally, holding a commanding lead with just one stage remaining.

Daniel Sanders stands on the precipice of a historic victory at the grueling Dakar Rally , poised to become only the second Australia n to conquer this legendary race. With a mere 131km stage remaining, Sanders holds a commanding nine-minute lead over his closest rival. Should he successfully navigate this final loop around Subaytah, including 61km timed against the clock, he will etch his name alongside his friend Toby Price in the annals of Australia n motorsports history.

Price, the first Australian to win the Dakar motorcycle title, achieved feats in 2016 and 2019.Sanders' dominance has been evident throughout the two-week Saudi Arabian odyssey. His lead, established after a commanding performance in the prologue, has remained unchallenged, save for the occasional threat from mechanical issues or accidents. While the remaining riders will likely engage in a ceremonial final stage, reminiscent of the Tour de France, Sanders, who has faced his share of Dakar misfortunes, remains cautious. He won't consider victory secured until he crosses the finish line of this near-8,000km marathon on Friday. Thursday's shortened stage, reduced to 152km due to early morning fog delays, offered Sanders' pursuers less opportunity to close the gap.Despite the shortened distance, Spain's Tosha Schareina, riding for Monster Energy Honda, made a valiant effort, winning the stage and chipping away at Sanders' lead. However, Sanders, riding his Red Bull KTM conservatively, still maintains a comfortable margin. Schareina's teammate, Adrien Van Beveren, secured third place overall, guaranteeing a podium finish for the Honda duo. Meanwhile, in the car race, Saudi driver Yazeed Al-Rajhi opened up a 6:11 lead over second-placed Henk Lategan. Lategan, who had enjoyed a two-minute advantage earlier in the race, finished fifth on Thursday. This leaves Al-Rajhi poised to claim his first Dakar victory, expressing confidence in his ability to secure the win
