Australian schools are neglecting their duty of care by offering our kids 'unrestricted' access to unhealthy food, writes Dr Flavia Fayet-Moore.

Every time I got a notice from the school about a fundraiser packed with foods that do not nourish children's learning, I'd say,"It's time to help this school out", but it was difficult finding the time between being a full-time working professional and a mother to my six-year-old daughter.

What we eat is more than pure nutrition, but if we are to help the next generation break the cycle of chronic disease, eating disorders and an overall negative relationship with what they eat, then something has to change society-wide.I don't blame my daughter’s school, or anyone for that matter. Children’s vegetable intake in Australia is arguably declining, in part due to the tipping of the offerings towards fewer fruit and vegetables.I volunteered and worked alongside a chef and the director at my daughter's early learning centre for two years from when she was 10 months old, then presented the work at an Infant Nutrition Conference.
