Olympics: Australia has shocked the world and taken a solo lead in the medal count after a record day 1 for the country.

The Australian team, comprised of Shayna Jack, Emma McKeon, Meg Harris and Mollie O’Callaghan, set a new Olympic record time of 3:28.92 at Paris La Defence Arena to win the event for a fourth-consecutive Games. Campbell’s sister Bronte also received a gold medal after competing in the heats.

However, Campbell failed to qualify for the Dolphins team ahead of the Paris Olympics, confirming her retirement after her final race at this year’s Australian Swimming Trials.Speaking to Channel 9 a couple of hours later, Campbell confessed she was still harbouring some “big feelings” after missing out on a fifth Olympic campaign.

“It’s a testament to the fact that we have been able to knowledge-share within the Australian swim team, that we haven’t hoarded knowledge. We have consistently put emphasis on our relays and those girls are incredible. Every single one of them I know personally and I know the struggles and the stories they’ve had to overcome.
