Former Australian tennis star Todd Woodbridge has offered an honest review of Nick Kyrgios' preparation for the Australian Open suggesting he focused too much on exhibition matches rather than getting fit to go deep into his home grand slam.

The top ranked Australian men's player announced he would not be competing at Melbourne Park on Monday afternoon after experiencing discomfort in his left knee.

Despite the withdrawal being the result of injury and a decision made to protect his future Woodbridge questioned whether Kyrgios gave himself the best chance to perform at his home grand slam. "Ultimately, you have to look at the preparation before; was that exactly right for what he needed? You can never be on top of every injury.Kyrgios made it to his first grand slam final at Wimbledon last year after playing several tournaments in the lead up but he has not played in a tournament since Tokyo in October last year.

"That's the question, and if you were looking back at his schedule you would say that it was difficult to see that prep when he was flying around the world playing exhibition events." “It was clear that with each passing session that he was getting sorer and sorer so I think we’ve made a sensible decision to withdraw him,” he said.
