A plump, expressive Barossa Valley shiraz that sells at the liquor barns for less than $27 has won high praise - and two gold medals - from a panel of international judges in the Cellars of the Sky contest.

In claiming gold The Riebke bumped off a distinguished line-up of challengers including M.Chapoutier Belleruche Côtes-du-Rhône 2020, a grenache blend; an Albert Bichot Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru les Sorbets 2017 Pinot Noir and a Santa Rita Medalla Real Gold Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile.

Clonakilla O’Riada Canberra Shiraz 2019 was described as “very refined, supple, juicy, elegant, classy and beautiful”.Singapore Airlines had the best results this year with five gold medals ahead of Qantas with three.

In awarding the Bin 18A the silver medal, the judges said it displayed “crisp oak,” and was “creamy, reductive, tangy, fresh, vibrant and not aggressive”.
