An elderly woman remains in a critical condition after falling into a sinkhole that collapsed on a footpath at Rotorua’s Whakarewarewa Village in New Zealand.

The local Aukaha News reported the steam rising from a sinkhole about 2 metres by 1 metre wide and 1.5 metres deep on a pathway into the village.

GNS Science volcanologist Brad Scott said that sinkholes were a"typical phenomenon" in geothermal areas."Where there is high steam flow to the surface and that steam reacts with the shallow near surface ground water, acid solutions," he told the New Zealand Herald. Mr Scott said the washing away of the clays and fine material would create a cavity and eventually collapse.Rotorua Lakes Council said they are working with Work Safe NZ to investigate the incident.
