Aussie young gun lands dream US move to college powerhouse... and NBA talent factory
After signing with the Cairns Taipans ahead of the NBL27 season on a multi-year deal, Paul will depart the club following the season to join Duke for its 2027-28 NCAA campaign.
Paul is yet to suit up for the Taipans this season after dealing with an ankle injury, but the highly-rated youngster says his time inside an NBL environment is already helping accelerate his development.
“Training in this NBL environment is accelerating my development, and I’m thankful to the Taipans, Coach Adam Forde, the Next Stars program and everyone involved for helping me to improve,” Paul said in an NBL statement. “I’m excited about committing to Duke, as it’s a dream come true and I’m equally excited about giving absolutely everything I have to Cairns this season. ”Next Stars General Manager Liam Santamaria said Paul had earned the opportunity through his performances and development.
“The game is evolving, and so are the opportunities available to young players. We are proud to be a key part of Luke’s journey and look forward to supporting him this season and beyond. ”Paul will now join one of the biggest college basketball programs in the US, with Duke having produced a long list of NBA stars including Kyrie Irving, Zion Williamson, Cooper Flagg and Jayson Tatum.
The Blue Devils have had 114 players selected in the NBA Draft, including 59 first-round selections, while also producing a NCAA record six No.1 overall picks. Fellow Australian Tyrese Proctor also spent three seasons with Duke before being selected with the 49th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Paul is regarded as one of Australia’s brightest young prospects and will now get his chance to follow that same pathway, joining one of the most successful programs in college basketball when it comes to producing NBA talent.
