Employers across the country are facing the prospect of a surge in people calling in sick this Friday following the announcement of a mid-week public holiday. 7NEWS

Victorians, who will also receive Friday as a public holiday for the eve of the AFL Grand Final, are facing the prospect of a four-day weekend. But elsewhere, employees could be using leave entitlements to bridge the gap between Thursday and Saturday, particularly in Western Australia where Monday is also a public holiday.

Personal finance specialist at Finder Taylor Blackburn said that would be the equivalent of about 1.7 million workers overall. If 1.7 million workers did take a day off on Friday, Blackburn said, it would cost employers upwards of $461 million in lost productivity. “A few companies have created a new brand of leave to deal with life that isn’t strictly about running a fever.”Barrister Ian Neil SC told 7NEWS.com.au that, from a legal perspective, the proximity of a public holiday to a sick day was “irrelevant”.“Paid sick leave, now generally called ‘personal leave’, is available under statute or contract,” he told 7NEWS.com.au.
