Anthony Albanese and Jacinda Ardern have discussed China, climate change and Kiwi criminals in talks in Sydney on Friday.
Anthony Albanese says he and Kiwi Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern are in “lockstep” over the Pacific to push back against China’s attempts to build influence, after New Zealand roused Beijing’s ire by criticising the Communist regime’s security agreement with Solomon Islands.
“The establishment of a persistent military presence in the Pacific by a state that does not share our values or security interests would fundamentally alter the strategic balance of the region and pose national-security concerns to both our countries,” the US-NZ statement said. “But you can see in recent efforts to try and create greater security arrangements directly with China, many of those nations choosing for themselves that they would stick more to an economic frame.”
Mr Albanese also confirmed the government will consider watering down its hardline policy of deporting Kiwi criminals in response to New Zealand complaints.
