Australians have been warned of major product shortages ahead of the busy Christmas retail period as a waterfront dispute drags on.
Union members at four Australian ports operated by DP World, which has its global headquarters in Dubai, this week moved to extend their industrial action.
A breakdown in negotiations between the parties has led to Australians facing the prospect of empty shelves as imports get disrupted in the process. "A port is crucial to our logistics flow in and out of Australia. When a port doesn't operate everything gets backed up," Mr Noes said. "And that is the unfortunate situation we're in. When you disrupt logistics chains in Australia, and especially ports, the flow-on effect on millions and millions of Australians, it's very significant.
"The salary demands are significantly above what you see elsewhere in Australia but that is then combined with… about 300 demands on the list for elements that actually will lower our productivity and efficiency," he said. DP World has also been told to"sit down with workers and their Union to remove ambiguity from the existing agreement to reduce future disputation around minor clauses".
