Austin is starting its annual program to curb harmful algae on Lady Bird Lake, with initial treatments beginning at Red Bud Isle
The process involves applying "lanthanum-modified clay" from a barge, which binds to phosphorus, inhibiting algae growth.
There will be temporary clouding of the water as a gray slurry is sprayed into the lake -- but city officials say this treatment is safe for humans, wildlife, and the environment and will settle to the bottom of the lake within hours.this year to increase the product application along the north shore east of I-35 and lessen the amount applied at Red Bud Isle.
