China now has the military arsenal to pose the greatest threat to the Australian mainland since World War II, experts warn.

A recent report by the Lowy Institute has revealed how one of Australia’s greatest strengths – its geographic isolation – is no longer a deterring factor for the Chinese military.

Picture: Getty Images According to a US Defence report, China has approximately 200 of these IRBM launchers, with the Lowy Institute paper suggesting this piece of weaponry could “drive changes to the balance of air and maritime power” in the region.

“China already possesses the capability to strike Australia from existing bases with bomber aircraft and long-range missiles.” This H-6N bomber, which would reportedly be armed with a hypersonic weapon, has a range of more than 9000 kilometres.
