The Australian government has unveiled a national framework to achieve a circular economy, with the goal of recycling or reusing 80% of the nation's resources by 2035. This ambitious plan addresses the growing issue of e-waste and aims to reduce landfill by significantly recovering valuable materials.
Australia will recycle or reuse 80 per cent of the nation's resources by 2035 under an ambitious circular economy plan launched by the federal government on Wednesday. The plan, which applies to all industries, looks to tackle the 22 kilograms of e-waste Australia ns produce per person per year, most of which is shipped overseas.Modelling by the CSIRO indicates that at least 26 million tonnes of materials would be spared from landfill if the plan's objectives are met.
Tanya Plibersek wants the plan to bring more e-waste through the doors of places like Sircel.Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek said the plan would guide the formation of a circular economy. 'It's such a tragedy that gold and copper and other precious metals are just ending up in landfill rather than being recycled,' Ms Plibersek said. 'Unless we have a plan for the whole economy to make it more circular, we get the scale of investment that we need.'Improving the recyclability of packaging, reducing food waste and innovating in critical mineral extraction and processing are all considered parts of the plan.Businesses already working in resource recovery have welcomed the plan. Sircel is the largest processor of e-waste onshore in Australia and has operations in NSW, Victoria and Queensland. The company said its operations could divert up to 100 per cent of electronic waste from landfill and rescue valuable materials such as gold and copper. Chief executive Anthony Karam said the plan would help encourage businesses and governments to look at operators like hi
