Defence Minister Richard Marles says both nations need to work closer to ensure stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Defence Minister Richard Marles, speaking from Vancouver, said both countries needed to work closer to ensure stability in the region.

"We reiterate our strong opposition to destabilising or coercive actions in the South China Sea, including dangerous maneuvers and the militarisation of disputed features." Confrontations between vessels from the two nations earlier this year sparked fears of a larger armed conflict that could involve the United States, which has repeatedly warned that it's obligated to defend the Philippines, a key Asian treaty ally.

Marles flew to Canada from the United States after talks this week in which Australia announced it will begin jointly building guided weapons with the US next year.Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles, left, inspects an honour guard before a meeting with his Canadian counterpart in Vancouver.
