The recent actions of Narendra Modi’s nationalist government are putting decades of good relations between the two countries under strain.
Australia has long enjoyed a productive relationship with India. Each year, the country of 1.4 billion sends thousands of its best students, academics and business leaders to Australia. More than two-thirds of Australia’s exports to India are now tariff-free and the cultural ties, driven by cricket, food and education, have never been stronger.
But the actions of the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi are now putting some of that at risk.that India was responsible for a “nest of spies” that attempted to steal information about Australia’s trade relationships, sensitive defence projects and airport security. Second, through Modi’sIndia was once seen as the great Asian democratic bulwark against another rising power: China. Now some of Delhi’s policies are increasingly reminiscent of Beijing.
These actions from the government of one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies would be concerning enough in their own right. But India is a member of one of Australia’s top security groups, the Quad, and a rising influence in international affairs. As three of the largest militaries in Asia, Australia, India and Japan all have a key role in maintaining regional stability. The Australian government’s navigation of the strained relationship with China shows it is possible to have disputes and continue on speaking terms.
