Australia has finalised a refugee resettlement deal with New Zealand, which will see asylum seeker boat arrivals detained in Australia's detention system resettled in New Zealand. Up to 150 refugees annually will be resettled over three years.
New Zealand will resettle up to 150 refugees per year for three years from Australia’s existing regional processing cohort, the two governments have announced. The announcement was made on Thursday in a joint media release from Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews and New Zealand's Minister for Immigration Kris Faafoi.
The refugees initially considered for resettlement will include those in Nauru or who are temporarily in Australia under regional processing arrangements; meet New Zealand’s Refugee Quota Programme requirements; are referred to New Zealand by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees; and are not engaged in other third-country resettlement pathways."Australia remains firm – illegal maritime arrivals will not settle here permanently.
"We are pleased to be able to provide resettlement outcomes for refugees who would otherwise have continued to face uncertain futures."
