This article explores how Australia and Spain are addressing concerns about children's excessive use of mobile phones and social media. It highlights new legislation in Australia restricting social media access for under-16s, and a grassroots movement in Spain delaying the age children receive smartphones. The article also touches upon similar initiatives in France, Italy, and Germany.
From stringent legislation to grassroots action, Australia and Spain lead the way in tackling children’s use of mobile phones and tablets. As concerns over phone use grow, countries around the world are weighing up how to tackle the issue in schools and at home. While some states in Australia ban the use of mobile phones in school, the federal government’s new ban will restrict children under 16 from social media entirely by the end of this year.
In Spain, parents in the Barcelona neighbourhood of Poblenou started a WhatsApp group in which they agreed to delay the age at which they gave their children a phone. Their initiative, (mobile-free adolescence), quickly spread across Catalonia and other parts of Spain. The French president, Emmanuel Macron, commissioned a report into the issue, saying the country needed to “take back control of our screens”. Italian classrooms in primary, elementary and lower secondary schools have banned the use of smartphones and tablets completely from September. German schools cannot bar pupils from bringing in mobile phones, but they can ban them from using them in the classroom or during breaktimes.
