Readers discuss the next election. If the Coalition wins, Australia will nuclear power eventually, but will not meet its 2030 carbon reduction commitments. If Labor wins, Australia will get transitional gas.

The Coalition is about to unveil its proposed nuclear power station sites. Presumably, they will replace existing coal-fired power stations. Otherwise, connecting them to the grid will add expense immigration intake, a future Coalition government could initially struggle to get the required nuclear expertise.

Despite this transition – indeed, because of it – the cost of electricity has declined. France’s costs are down over 47 per cent, Spain’s by 32 per cent and Sweden over eight per cent. Throughout the EU electricity has become cheaper and there has been no increase in blackouts. No energy company is ever going to build a nuclear reactor, and no government will ever subsidise the cost of building one as it would be political suicide.

If we believe Peter Dutton, then he will remedy the problem promptly when elected. Dutton needs to be reminded that in the UK where the Conservatives have been in power for 14 years, there are the same daily complaints about the cost of living. And now, with an election pending, the UK Labor Party believe it can remedy the matter promptly when they are elected.

Labor’s recently introduced land tax on investment properties is essentially a tax on the poor and most disadvantaged.
