Whatever the official status of La Niña is should be irrelevant. What's important is the impact on Australians, particularly those who have already suffered through major floods, writes Sky News Australia Chief Meteorologist Tom Saunders.

The Bureau of Meteorology declared the most recent event over in June, but the rain has kept coming and the Pacific has cooled again during the past few weeks.

SST anomalies across the Pacific showing a clear cool La Nina signal near the equator. Green arrows show the atmospheric response of stronger trade winds which pump moisture towards Australia. The BOM only update their La Niña status every two weeks, meaning the information can be up to 14 days old. For those that love statistics, it's the first time on record a triple La Niña has coincided with a double -IOD, although considering the Pacific and Indian Oceans are millions of years old it's certain there have been occurrences in the past.
