I am a proud progressive Jew and I refuse to accept that there can be no bridges built between communities
s a Jewish Australian, my community is in mourning. I have friends and family who know some of those directly affected by Hamas-led violence, and many of these same people fear that they will lose more as their loved ones go to serve in this war. As the executive director of the NewFund, a progressive organisation focused on supporting human and civil rights organisations across Israel-Palestine, every member, donor and supporter in our community with whom I speak is grief-stricken.
Just as the 60% of Israelis who demonstrate each week against the Netanyahu government would refuse to be counted as Israelis who support the actions of their government, so too we need to recognise that the same is true of Palestinians who are trapped in Gaza and not aligned with Hamas. Which is why I, as a proud progressive Jew, refuse to accept the posturing that represents “the other” as pure evil.
If it is possible for the victims of violence to understand that further cycles of violence will get us nowhere, it must be possible for us to also understand this at home. Australia is, thankfully, a peaceful country.
