Australia has launched a dispute in the World Trade Organisation against India's sugar subsidies, which are threatening the nation's $1.8 billion sugar export industry. India's sugar cane industry received about $1 billion of new subsidies last year and as a result, the global sugar price hit a ten year low.
It’s estimated Australia’s $1.8 billion sugar cane export industry could experience $360 million in losses over two years. Trade Minister Simon Birmingham and Agricultural Minister David Littleproud say while they understand India’s desire to support its farmers, the inconsistent subsidies are hurting Australian farmers.
