NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is set to delay thousands of second COVID-19 vaccines and redirect the doses to Sydney’s south-west in a dramatic escalation of the government’s response to the fast-spreading Delta strain. Follow our live coverage
The latest vaccination rollout figures show which states and territories are lagging behind in the rollout.
About 75 per cent of people aged over 70 have received one dose in South Australia, NSW and Victoria, compared to 94 per cent of people in this age group in the ACT. Across the country, 35 per cent of people over 70 are fully vaccinated. Only 59 per cent of people aged between 50 and 70 have received one dose of the vaccine in NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia, compared to 81 per cent in the ACT. About 21 per cent of people in this age bracket have been fully vaccinated across Australia.Spacing out the two doses of the Pfizer COVID vaccine by eight to 10 weeks boosts immunity more effectively than a shorter interval of the two-shot regimen, a new study has found.
“For the longer dosing interval ... neutralising antibody levels against the Delta variant were poorly induced after a single dose, and not maintained during the interval before the second dose,” the authors of the study said. “Following two vaccine doses, neutralising antibody levels were twice as high after the longer dosing interval compared with the shorter dosing interval.”
