Increasingly, nostalgia is in fashion. Whether it was the music and culture of the 1960s, 1970s, the ’80s or the ’90s, all have had their second lap around the sun. Recently, it’s been the early 2000s getting a rerun.
Chandimal’s monumental innings, only his second century against Australia, had also ensured that the hosts surpassed their previous best team tally against the baggy greens – 547 as far back as 30 years ago in Colombo. Australia’s lower order did not unduly delay the hosts, handing their new coach Chris Silverwood a first victory against Australia in seven attempts since the start of last summer’s Ashes. A 1-1 scoreline reflected that after playing well on the first four days of the series, Australia lost every session of the last three.
