On Australia Day, Sydney witnessed two powerful dawn reflections: one on Bondi Beach and another at the iconic Sydney Opera House. The Bondi Beach event featured traditional Gamay dances and a smoking ceremony, honoring the resilience and cultural heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Meanwhile, the Sydney Opera House illuminated with Indigenous artwork, 'River Life' by Simon, symbolizing the deep connection between Aboriginal people and water.

A hundred people gathered this morning for a 'Dawn Reflection' on Bondi Beach in Sydney's eastern suburbs. The Gamay dancers performed at sunrise on Bondi Beach on January 26. Members of the Bondi community gathered on the sand of the famous beach for a quiet reflection. The Gamay dancers performed traditional dance from the local area and a smoking ceremony.

The reflection ceremony acknowledged the resilience and survival of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their continued connection to country. A breakfast BBQ was held at Bondi Surf Bathers' Life Saving Club after the event, with gold coin donations given to the GO Foundation. Early risers in Sydney enjoyed an Australia Day dawn reflection service at the Sydney Opera House as the sun rose today. As the skies were painted streaks of purple and pink during a magnificent sunrise, the Opera House sails also lit up in an incredible display of Indigenous art. Hundreds of early birds woke to catch a glimpse of the artwork projected onto the sails of the iconic Sydney landmark. Simon's piece 'River Life' explores the profound connection between Aboriginal people and the water. Attribution: Destination NSW The dawn ceremony, known as 'Barabiyanga' in the Eora language, served as a moment for all Australians to reflect on 'unity, inclusion, and shared commitment to the country's future', according to Destination NSW. The display and ceremony also acknowledged the continuing cultural heritage of First Nations peoples of Australia. As night falls on Australia Day 2025, there will be more images projected onto the sails of the Sydney Opera House. The sails began to light up with Simon's work as the sun rose on Sydney harbour
